Yesterday, a friend took us on a little trip. We barely left the Brussels which was pretty convenient. We went to the Hallerbos, the nearby forest, a great place for a walk or hike. At this time of year, the Hallerbos is covered with never ending carpets of blooming bluebells (hyacinth flowers). It’s a dreamy place and a great spot for a quick escape from the everyday reality.
We arrived shortly before noon and walked through the Hallerbos forest for more than two hours. We were surprised there were not many people. Maybe they were discouraged by the weather forecast. When we looked at the Google maps on our way to the forest, we thought it was quite small, but the total area of the forest is 542 ha, so you can easily spend hours walking through it.
The forest was changing every few hundred meters as we were going through its valleys, as we were passing by different kinds of vegetation and as the sun was peeking and hiding behind the clouds. We saw the beautiful bluebell carpets from all angles, under different light conditions, surrounded by various kinds of trees, grass, and plants, and they appeared to be changing in front of our eyes. Every few steps the forest seemed different, the bluebells more beautiful and the place had to be explored and documented. A result? More than 10 000 steps counted and hundreds of pictures taken.
The Hallerbos forest has an official website where every few days there is a new video of blooming bluebells posted. The forest can be reached from Brussels in about 30 minutes by car, or you can take a train to Halle (a nearby city), and use free shuttles which take you from the train station to the forest. For more information check out the Hallerbos website.
Flowering season of bluebells depends on the weather, but generally, the second half of April is the best time to visit the Hallerbos. You can check the current blooming state on the website. But regardless of blooming bluebells, Hallerbos is a great place to visit and walk through. In the middle of the forest, you completely forget about nearby cities, busy streets, or your own to-do lists. In Hallerbos, you can escape your everyday stereotype for a few hours and instead enjoy and admire nature’s beauty.
